Like many musicians,
Aaron started studying music to impress a girl.
Wayyyy back in 4th
grade a girl in his class played piano and Aaron figured that the best way to
get her attention was to also play piano. So he asked his mom for
lessons and diligently began learning such classics as "London Bridge" and
"Mary Had A Little Lamb". He even wrote a love song or two :)
But one day he said to
his Mom, "I'd like to quit lessons now." After she stopped laughing, his
mom said, "You made a commitment to the piano. Let's give it a little more
time." Years later, he learned that "a little more time" is a very vague
term that apparently lasts anywhere from a few minutes to 9 years.
Fortunately, Aaron grew
to enjoy music, eventually studying voice, guitar, drums, double bass,
vibraphone, clarinet and saxophone.
At St. Xavier High School he studied music theory, joined several bands and performed
at Bogarts, Sudsy's, Southgate House, Never on Sundays and The Mad Frog. In
1996, although very passionate about music, Aaron decided to pursue a
bachelors degree in Secondary English Education at Miami University.
In college, he
performed in the Miami University Jazz Band, a Phish cover band and several
alternative rock bands. And in 2000, as a senior, he wrote and recorded a
full length album to demonstrate his abilities as a singer and
multi-instrumentalist. Here are 3 of the songs recorded professionally
by Aaron:
After graduating from
Miami University Aaron taught for 4 years at Mount Notre Dame High School.
In addition to teaching American Literature, World Literature and a film
class, Aaron was the music director for litigurical services, providing
praise and worship music for school functions. In 2002 he
taught songwriting / poetry to his sophomore English class and had all of
the students submit their songs to the John Lennon Songwriting Contest.
One of his students won the contest, was featured in USA Weekend and
received a $1000 savings bond. MND then received 2 acoustic guitars, 2
keyboards and a synthesizer. Click

In 2004 Aaron realized that
he didn't want to teach The Scarlet Letter for the millionth time or set his
alarm clock ever again. So, he decided to pursue a career in music.
He began teaching private lessons out of his
home and through word of mouth built a successful studio. In 2007 Aaron and
Linda Bergholz, both managing successful studios out of their homes,
realized the need for a music academy in the Loveland area. After careful
research and planning they opened Loveland Music Academy (www.lovelandmusicacademy.com) in the summer of
'07. LMA now has a staff of 26 teachers and over 500
students.
In 2009 Aaron took 24
students to the Chicago Recording Company, a world famous studio where
artists such as Madonna, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Coldplay and
countless others have recorded. One song from that session garnered
the attention of the band Down. They were so impressed by the student's
performance of "Ghosts Along the Mississippi" that the band embedded the video into their official
website.
Phil Anselmo, the lead singer of Down and Pantera, had this to say about the
video, "Unbelievable! These kids are great! How flattering! If
they keep it up (learning from the best), they'll be getting a call from me
to jam in a couple of years!"
The video was even posted on
MTV.com
And in February of 2010
Aaron took 42 students to the Saint Claire Recording Company, a 3 million
dollar studio in Lexington, Kentucky. The video for one of the songs,
"Cowboys from Hell", has received over 500,000 views on YouTube
and was posted on metal websites all around the world, including Pantera's! Here is the
video.
In 2011 Aaron O'Keefe took
13 of his students to perform and record covers of "The End of Heartache"
and "My Curse", two songs by the grammy-nominated Metalcore band Killswitch
Engage. The videos, available on youtube, have since been viewed by
audiences around the world including the actual band members themselves.
They were so impressed with the kids' performance that they contacted Mr.
O'Keefe directly to inquire on how they can send some "gifts" for these
budding musicians. They appear in this
photograph with some
of the merchandise provided by Killswitch Engage - 6 autographed posters, 8
pairs of gloves, 9 t-shirts, 9 hats, 3 keychains, 4 patches, 1 hoodie, 2
bookbags and 3 belts.
Aaron's hobbies include
reading, bookbinding, consuming chocolate, playing heavy metal and writing
about himself in the third person.
“My 14
year old daughter started guitar lessons with Aaron Feb 2008. Her
lessons are laid back and fun. Aaron constantly encourages her and
keeps the lessons interesting. Not only does she get to play
guitar, but she gets to sing as well. Her first recital
(March 2008) was playing & singing Bubbly in a duet in front of a live
audience at Paxton’s Grill. She also got to sing back-up vocals
for a band playing Johnny B. Goode!! --Lena & Tom Sattler
"Aaron, we cannot than you enough for what
you have done for Blake over the past several years. Not only have you
taught him how hard work pays off, he has developed life skills that
will benefit him a lifetime. For example, I have seen Blake give a
speech/presentation in front of a couple hundred people. What his has
learned from you helped build that confidence & skills. Not only is he
a decent guitar player, he has now created his own studio and started to
get into recording, editing, etc. It’s all very impressive and we
credit your teaching style & personality for Blake’s growth in these
areas" --Bruce and Connie Hillard
"We love how you
uplift your students by giving them lots of confidence in their
musical ability! Teaching music is not just a job for you, it is
your passion and you really pass that passion on to your students.
Thanks for all the great work you do with these kids."
--Michael & Lori Lucas
"We are so grateful
for your lessons at Loveland Music Academy; our daughter had taken lessons for 3 years from
another instructor and did not enjoy it. You really make her guitar
lessons fun for her. She learns songs she knows and loves. You have a
great way of motivating her and we are so proud to see her progress."
--John & Suzanne Kennedy
"I feel
we found Aaron at just the right point in Michael's musical "career".
He had just finished his third year in Classical Guitar lessons. While
his skills continued to improve, he started to complain about having to
learn unfamiliar music. Recitals were few and far between. Enter: Aaron
and the Loveland Music Academy. The emphasis on regular performances
and choice of pop/rock music has really boosted Michael's motivation for
and enjoyment of his music. He loves the opportunity to perform in a
group as he did during the last recital. We appreciate Aaron's effort
to communicate with us regularly via e-mail and his website. We would
recommend his program to ANY aspiring musician." --Mike & Pam
Staun
"Our son Cooper has thoroughly enjoyed
his drum instruction over the past two years. We have been amazed at
his level of progress. Cooper has been very dedicated without much
encouragement from my wife and I... This is an indication he is having
fun in the process. Thanks for your teaching and coaching." --Marea &
Clark Johnson
"Aaron
has helped our son achieve a new, higher level with his guitar. The live
performances are great and they also provide motivation for the
students." --Joann & Ken Caskey
"David has made
tremendous progress since he started taking lesson from you. He
comes home enthused after his lesson and excited about the music he
can play. We have seen his confidence grow each time he has
performed in front of an audience at your recitals. Your nurturing
style of teaching and encouragement has enabled David to relax and
enjoy himself while learning to play guitar and sing. You have even
convinced him to play a few pieces on the piano again. You have
found the right combination of instruction and encouragement and
David has responded. Thank you for all you have done." --Mark
and Paula Lafranconi
"Having access to
Aaron’s website was so helpful.
As a parent
considering Aaron as an instructor for my son, I was exposed to
his philosophy on teaching music. This assured me we held
consistent views and that I could support the direction of
Aaron’s instructions.
I also found
the website incredibly helpful because of the ease of
understanding Aaron’s schedule. I found this eliminated back
and forth between us and helped find an appointment with minimal
effort.
My son is
learning, after 18 months of basic piano, to play blues, rock
and jazz. With this comes a very different feel and skill –
syncopation, rhythm, and swing. Aaron’s website contains
recordings that we can play that demonstrate the musical feel.
I have
aaronokeefe.com
on my Favorites list. It allows me to quickly access
information regarding my son’s musical instruction – recital
times, phone numbers, fees, calendar possibilities, in one easy
location."

"You give the kids the experience in
front of a live audience to show themselves how capable they are to
play in a band. You help the kids get out of their comfort zone.
This will give them confidence that will transfer to all aspects of
their lives. You are a very hard worker and an inspiration to the
kids. I actually love watching you play in the bands with the kids
because you can see the pure JOY in your face. This love of music
from you has no airs because even if the kids make mistakes like
yesterday in
Bleeding Love you don't ridicule them to make them feel bad
you encourage them to try harder next time." -- Darcy and Rick
Michelfelder
"Our 13 year old son has been
taking
guitar lessons with Aaron for several years, and he has
become quite good at playing guitar, and just as importantly, he
really enjoys the lessons and the ways that Aaron has challenged
him to keep getting better. Aaron provides a nice balance
between the necessary, more “rote” teaching of
chord progressions, scales, etc. with letting kids
quickly learn a
guitar riff that sounds cool, and keeps them enthused
about practicing. Along those lines, one of the things we
really like is Aaron’s recital approach of having the kids play
together as “bands,” with each group covering a range of playing
ability. Right from the beginning, students get excited they’re
actually playing music. Aaron has a warm, low key yet
enthusiastic teaching style that our son has really responded
well to. We highly recommend Aaron as a music teacher."
--Jon and Lisa Hall
"I like Aaron
because he makes piano fun. He takes all his music classes and
puts them together for a concert with cool songs. He also
encourages me so I don't want to quit" Azalea Laverde, age 9
"Our son,
Blake, has only taken lessons from Aaron for about 6 months
but he has learned so much in that short time. In addition
to learning guitar and vocals, he has learned to set goals,
the importance of practice and teamwork and, most
importantly, how to perform in front of an audience. We
feel that Aaron's teaching style is effective and brings out
the best in the students. We love the way he incorporates
technology into the program. We have already recommended
this program to so many people. The skills they are
acquiring will be used for a lifetime." –Bruce and Connie
Hillard
"Aaron
has created a unique learning environment which
motivates my son to learn, practice, experiment with and
ENJOY his guitar. Aaron is an excellent musician,
teacher and administrator of his business. Lessons run
on time, the rules are clear and each student is
important. I believe it is important to have great
adult role models in my kids’ lives and we have found
that here. He continuously goes above and beyond and he
obviously loves what he does." --Ann Mosby
"Thank YOU for all you
have done!! You were the best thing to happen to
Aidan in his musical journey! No words can express
how much we appreciate and are grateful for all the
lessons, videos, and recitals...." --Sean & Laura
Higgins
"I decided to start to take
piano lessons again after not taking them for almost 30
years! I have been taking lessons again for only almost
4 months, and Aaron gave me enough confidence to play
two songs on my own in the last recital. I have
re-discovered my enjoyment of playing the piano and
learning new things about music. Aaron is always
patient with me and gives me lots of encouragement. I
also enjoy when he accompanies me. He makes sure thatI enjoy the songs I am playing. He realizes
that it is important for the musician to like what they
are playing, especially when you are doing it by choice,
and a parent isn't making you practice.
So if you are "older" and afraid to either start to play
for the first time or getting back to it, go for it! It
is a great stress reliever and will give you great
self-satisfaction and confidence in yourself and your
abilities. It definitely has for me!" --Barb Welt
"What I
like most about Aaron's lessons . . .
The fact that the students are always working toward
something, recitals / performances. They aren't just going
to lessons week after week. They are building on
fundamentals to perform in front of a live audience. And,
it's not just their parents. The shows are very organized.
Aaron gets everyone involved. Each student plays their part
and the end result is a pleasure to watch / hear.
I also like that the students are taught music that can be
heard on the radio, on a CD, etc. Music they can relate to.
They aren't playing a page out of a book. When they are
with their friends and/or family and hear a song playing,
they can pick up their instrument and play / sing along.
Aaron is always open to suggestions regarding the type of
music the students are playing. If a student wants to learn
to play a certain song, Aaron does his best to put together
a group of students to perform that particular song.
It is obvious that Aaron loves music. He plays many
different instruments during lessons to allow the student
the opportunity to learn how to accompany different sounds.
He is also very energetic during lessons. He accomplishes a
lot during a half hour session. I believe his love for
music trickles down through the students. When they see him
get excited about how much progress they've made since the
last lesson or how well they did during a performance, that
makes the student that much more excited and makes them want
to practice even harder.
I enjoy the video clips that are filmed during rehearsals or
performances. This gives the students a chance to see, for
themselves, how they did. They can see/hear where they need
to improve." --Michaela Sego
"Aaron O'Keefe has more than just the education and
talent that he displays as a musician. He also
possesses the skills that make him a fantastic
teacher of young musicians as well as an uncanny
ability to successfully encourage students to
broaden their aspirations and keep them excited.
Thanks again for having the passion to do this.”
--David Nobiletti
"Sharon and I were so
impressed with you at the Saint Claire Recording
Company. We know you have worked hard for the last
month or more to prepare, but it was unbelievable
how hard you worked yesterday to keep things on
track. The kids that do these sessions will remember
it, and their instructors that made it possible, for
the rest of their lives. You should feel very
proud." --Bill and Sharon McKinney
"Thank you so much for
all of the time and energy you put in to pull
together Saint Claire and make it so successful! I
know it requires a great deal of time and
coordination on your part and wanted you to know
that we truly appreciate it. Emily loved it and I
know she'll always remember and treasure the
experience! We thought seeing the whole process in
the studio was very interesting also. The facility
was very nice and the Saint Claire employees were
also very nice and professional. I can't wait to
see the finished product. They were also very kind
to Emily (especially considering her age) with their
comments and encouragement. She was so happy."
--Jennifer Leavengood
"I just wanted to say
thank you for everything you did to make the Saint
Claire Recording Company happen. It was an amazing
experience (not only for my daughter, but also me)."
--Margaret Violi

work and for having the vision to give all of the
students the opportunity to experience the recording
studio. Neal and I are amazed by your commitment
and talent!" --Neal & Mary Clevenger
"I am emailing on
behalf of our family to let you know how much we
appreciate all of the hard work you do for all of
the kids. The thought of all of the organization and
planning that goes into planning a trip like this is
mind boggling. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for
doing all that you do. The Nashville trip is a
memory that our whole family will remember. It was
absolutely amazing. DK is still on cloud 9 and I am
sure will remain there for a very long time. He
talks about it constantly and it has strengthened
his love of music. You have given these kids a
true gift. DK admires and respects you very much (as
Rick and I do as well). So thank you again, for your
amazing work and contribution to all of the kids, as
these experiences you give them will make them
better, more confident people as they grow".
